RE: School Cancellation Feb. 22 & 23, 2018

The Monongalia County Schools and its larger school community enjoy a strong relationship, largely due to our shared priority of providing our students a high quality public education in a safe, secure educational environment.

In the spirit of that common objective, I’m sending this memo to share with you the most accurate, up-to-date information available regarding an imminent work stoppage by Monongalia County School employees – and all county school employees across the state – this Thursday and Friday, Feb. 22 & 23.

Earlier this month, 89% of Monongalia County Schools’ employees voted to grant the leadership of their three employee associations – the WVAFT, WVEA and WVSSPA – the choice to declare a statewide work stoppage. As the associations have declared their intention to do so this Thursday and Friday, the Monongalia County Schools will not have sufficient staff in place to safely operate schools or transport and feed students. Therefore, all our schools will be closed Feb. 22 & 23.

Please be aware that, due to lack of staffing, all on-site activities at all Monongalia County schools are cancelled Feb. 22 & 23. This cancellation includes before-school and after-school care options; student food distribution; both extracurricular and community league athletic practices and competitions; and student field trips.

Also, be advised that all schools’ administrators – principals and assistant principals – will be on-site Thursday and Friday and the MCS Central Office will be open.

Additionally, any instructional days missed due to a work stoppage must be made up by June 30, 2018. This mandate may require days originally designated as out-of-school-environment or outside-of-calendar days (March 29 and 30; April 2 and 3; May 29-31; and June 4-8 and 11-15) may be converted to regular days of instruction.

In the event that the Feb. 22 & 23 work stoppage in Monongalia County continues into the week of February 26, parents, students and staff will be notified through established channels of additional cancellations.

Please be assured that we recognize this disruption in the instructional calendar poses an enormous inconvenience for our students, their families and our shared community: we're working to both minimize its impact and keep our students as safe as possible.

As always, thank you for your continuing support of the Monongalia County Schools.

Dr. Frank Devono
